Survey on an Android tablet

The MiHope (Mobile Interactions bringing Hope) project is a joint venture between Tearfund & Nimbus, aiming to 'eliminate parent to child transmission of HIV by 2015' in Malawi and Zambia, a UN AIDS target. Leveraging mobile technologies the project ensures pregnant women and their male partners have greater access to testing, treatment and care, particularly in rural areas.

Over a one week period our application was able to capture over 5000 data points across a couple of tablets.

Rareloop created an easy-to-use survey deployed on a number of ASUS Transformer tablet devices. The application is being used at a number of key points during the project lifecycle to monitor the progress, and hopefully improvement, in the quality of life and access to the much needed medial care of members of rural communities in the two African countries.

Offline Data Storage (On Device)

Cellular connectivity in rural Africa can be incredibly unreliable and it was important that Rareloop's app was capable of locally storing all responses until a connection could be made. As well as storing the data within the application for uploading later to our cloud server we also exported each response onto the devices SD Card so that it could be immediately accessed out in the field.

Over a one week period our application was able to capture over 5000 data points across a couple of tablets, without losing a single response.

Data Capture & Analysis

Multiple tablets were employed in the field to improve the efficiency of data capture but responses from all the devices were fed back into a single online repository. MiHope made use of Rareloop's cloud server data aggregation and analysis tools.

Our online tools enabled Tearfund to get an instant overview of trends formed by the answers received by the team in the field.

More detailed analysis was also possible in the form of our auto-generated cross tablulated tables. This enabled Tearfund to quickly compare information and make correlations between questions to draw out any inherent demographic trends that might otherwise not be apparent.

We also provided Tearfund with the optional export all of the collected data from the online repository for easy import into Excel or SPSS, or as a download in the form of an HTML report.

Custom Inputs

As part of the build process Rareloop consulted on the user-interaction (UI) for the survey. A number of questions required a Likert-esque scale and Rareloop built a custom star rating input for Tearfund optimised for a touch interface.

The development of custom input types draws from Rareloop's usability experience and must be easy to recognise and easy to use to meet the standards we expect of our own products. In this instance they proved to be an excellent alternative to the multi-choice buttons that were used elsewhere in the design.
